The dying tweets of China’s moon rover will make you cry

It’s looking like the Jade Rabbit—China’s first moon rover—is going to die in space after experiencing a technical malfunction. It’s currently unable to close its solar panels, making it unable to hibernate and incredibly vulnerable during the freezing two week lunar night. Though we won’t know for sure if it’s dead until a few weeks from now, Chinese scientists aren’t optimistic.

The rover has its own personalized social media account, and has been tweeting its own lonely death. It might be the saddest thing you’ll ever read. It’s like a depressing alternate ending to “WALL-E,” where the camera pulls back and we realize the whole human spaceship part was just a final lonely dream and really WALL-E just malfunctioned and died alone on a barren Earth.
The rover’s final statement:
Although I should’ve gone to bed this morning, my masters discovered something abnormal with my mechanical control system. My masters are staying up all night working for a solution. I heard their eyes are looking more like my red rabbit eyes. Nevertheless, I’m aware that I might not survive this lunar night.
If this journey must come to an early end, I am not afraid. Whether or not the repairs are successful, I believe even my malfunctions will provide my masters with valuable information and experience.
The sun has already set here and the temperature is falling very quickly. I’ve said a lot today, yet still feel like it’s not enough. I’ll tell everyone a secret. Actually, I’m not feeling especially sad. Just like any other hero, I’ve only encountered a little problem while on my own adventure.
Good night, planet Earth. Good night, humanity.
Goodbye, dusty moon robot. You taught us all how to love. We hope the scientists programmed you to be brave.
